I love the Word, Scripture, singing and praying. I also recently got married to Paul and we have been seeking God’s direction ever since (and before!).

A few months ago I had a clear picture of a man’s hand and arm thrusting a sword and following along in parallel a little lower an arrow flying along behind. I looked up the Bible passages with arrows in it but found they were generally representing conviction and judgements from God or the hurtful words of men and women and this made no sense to me and did not fit in with the feel of my picture so I put it to one side.

As I continued to pray on the matter of guidance I decided to fast and pray for the day and I most clearly got given this explanatory scripture and also a passage from a book which made perfect sense of my picture and contains a helpful teaching for us, I believe. In case you don’t know my husband Paul, he is always speaking to people about God and getting involved in as many ways of serving and reaching out to people as he can. I, on the other hand, love nothing more than reading and writing so we have two sides of the story going on! So, how do they need each other to fulfill the purposes of God?

Key scripture Isaiah 49 v 1 -2

And he has made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand he has hidden me, and made me a polished shaft (arrow), in his quiver he has hidden me.

2nd key text p144 ‘The Present Truth’ – Charles Spurgeon

And if you seek the conversion of others, especially recollect that it is words from God’s mouth rather than words from your own mouth that will affect it; enquire of the master, for he knows how to draw the bow when you cannot. You might draw it at a venture, but he can draw it at a certainty, so that the arrows shall surely pierce between the joints of the armour.

3rd key scripture 1 John 1

In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him nothing was made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

V12 but as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name; who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

And the word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The bow – is the action, the doing, the propulsion of stepping out being prompted by the Holy Spirit

The arrow – is the word, sharp, directed accuracy of God’s word

The word is the light and the life

Scripture shows the birthing of the World and of Jesus through the creative word of God. Scripture will lead us on as it throws light upon our own life situations as we are living them and it guides us precisely as and when we need guiding.

Ps. 33 v 6 – by the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea together as a heap, he lays up the deep in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord, let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him, for he spoke and it was done, he commanded and it stood fast.

Ps. 107 v 12 – those who sat in darkness and in the shadow of death, bound in affliction and irons because they rebelled against the words of God, and despised the counsel of the most high, therefore he brought down their heart with labour, they fell down and there was none to help. Then they cried out to the lord in their trouble and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death and broke their chains in pieces.

Then v 20 – he sent his word and healed them and delivered them from their destructions.

Ps. 147 v 15 – he sends out his command to the earth. His word runs very swiftly.

Isaiah 40 v 8 – the grass withers, the flower fades but the word of our God stands forever.

Isaiah 55 v 11 – so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.

We must do what we can do and God will do what we cannot do for ourselves. That is how we know that direction and plan is from God because he will make possible for us what we could not do on our own.

Ps. 8 v 22 the voice of wisdom – the Lord possessed me at the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I have been established from everlasting, from the beginning, before there was ever an earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth; while as yet he had not made the earth or the fields, or the primal dust of the world. When he prepared the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above, when he strengthened the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea, its limit, so that the waters would not trangress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him as a master craftsman, and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him. Rejoicing in his inhabited world, and my delight was with the sons of men. Now, therefore listen to me my children, for blessed are those who keep my ways. Hear instruction and be wise, and do not disdain it. Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors, for whoever finds me finds life, and obtains favour from the Lord but he who sins against me, wrongs his own soul; all those who hate me love death.

Hebrews 4 v 12 – for the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

What am I saying?

We need to soak ourselves in the word of God so we can have the life of his word brought down into our own life. Then we really will be his sons and daughters as we will be full of the creative word of God which brings forth life. Then we have God’s life in our veins. Then we have faith and his power, his holy spirit comes to us, we attract it to us and the holy spirit brings us alive with life as Christ had life . Then we will see miracles in our lives as God’s power comes down to live in us as his word lives in us, imprinted on our hearts and running through our veins like spiritual blood. Then we will have the quality of life that God wants us to have. The life of freedom and power. Then we will be filled with God’s life and will be transformed.

If you have too much of the word you will dry up (all talk and study and no action, arrow still in the quiver) if you have too much of the spirit you will blow up (all action, arrows scattered in all directions), if you have the word and the spirit you will grow up (and be accurately directed to be effective – experiencing that Jesus’s burden is light and his yoke is easy)

When we sing praises it draws God down into our life and we experience him in a more profound and life changing way. We get a bit of heaven in our lives that we get to keep right now. When we pray the word over our lives our prayers become eternally alive and go up to the throne room of God. Our prayers take on the creative life of the word of God. Our prayer stays alive in the spirit of God in which it was birthed.

When we absorb scripture we get to think more in line with God so we pray more in line with God. If we are praying more in line with God then our prayers will be answered to our satisfaction because we will share God’s aims and purposes and we will want what He wants to deliver!
