It’s January! and a new year is upon us. What will it hold? Some find looking at the next 12 months exciting, adventurous and are full of optimism while others face them with uncertainty, anxiousness and fear. How are you viewing what is ahead??

If we are all honest, not knowing each day we awake what we will actually face can be unnerving if we truly analyse it – we all have our plans and hopes for each day – our diaries are full of dates, events and deadlines but there are those times when what we are expecting to happen doesn’t run to plan – sometimes for good reasons and sadly sometimes for bad reasons. There are times when we would love to know how a situation we are facing will work out just to ease any worries and uncertainty but we are never going to be able to master that art! So how do we cope not knowing what each day really holds and enjoy the not needing to know?

In Jeremiah chapter 29 v 11 we read ” For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” and Psalm 31 v 14 & 15 reads “But as for me, I trust in You, O LORD, I say, “You are my God.” My times are in Your hand …. ”

No one apart from God knows what our future actually holds – and what security, awe and wonder is ours knowing that the One who created the whole universe, put stars in their place and holds all things in His Hand, created us and is completely aware of our every day needs and happenings? Yes there are times when we will face struggles etc but there will also be times of great joy & happiness. The verses above are a great reminder that knowing the future is not what is important, it’s knowing the One who holds it that is paramount! When struggles arise, He will be there to help us and sustain us & when happy times abound, He will be there to rejoice in them with us.

So this New Year let’s consider what we are placing our trust in for the next 12 months – so many look to horoscopes and worse to try and work out how life will run …… only God knows the future and nothing will bring you real peace other than getting to know the God who made you and then experiencing His best plans laid out for you every day – you don’t need to worry about this year, you just need “in all your ways to submit to Him, and he will make your paths straight” Proverbs 3 v 6.

That’s the way for us all to have a proper happy new year!
