How can I be happy? One thing I know to be true is that happiness is only noticeable in contrast. Just like you’d never know light without darkness or appreciate the sunshine without rain.

So Happiness needs a little and even a lot of sadness before you can fully appreciate it. That is why the Christian faith offers a very clear model of the experience of happiness, because it acknowledges that dreadful thing called sin. Christianity says that we are all sinners and that our wrongdoing needs to be acknowledged and grieved over. We need to see it’s seriousness, recognise it’s effects on ourselves and others, weep over the unhappiness we have caused God and those around us…..and then we say sorry to God. Strangely, this process of saying sorry is the birth of a deep joy in our lives.

The moment we make this step we move from darkness to light and from grief to joy. We see happiness as it emerges in the complete forgiveness only Jesus will give.

What has happened in this action is that your life has taken its correct place within the world. You have entered God’s plan – that’s a plan for happiness.

It is a very humble step to take and not everyone wants to take it. To admit that our ways are not the best ways and to discover the ways of Jesus Christ instead.

It’s from here – that happiness is found.
